My Detroit Address. History of Detroit
History Detroit - Prelude to a City
"Those who shall be so happy as to inhabit that noble country cannot but remember with gratitude those who have discovered the way by venturing to sail upon an unknown lake for above 100 leagues." - Father Louis Hennepin, 1679 report on the Detroit areaIn the 1600's, France began establishing forts at strategic locations in North America, in order to try to keep the British from moving west out of New England and to establish a monopoly on trade. Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac felt that the area that had become known as le detroit, or the straits, was an obvious location for a major post. The river was narrow enough that a cannon could be fired from one side to the other, but substantial enough to provide a defense. The surrounding Great Lakes and waterways meant easy travel from most major points. The court in France agreed, and Cadillac was allowed to establish a settlement at the Detroit River in 1701.
Fort Ponchartrain, the settlement built by Cadillac, was not likely the first settlement in the area, though little is known about any previous inhabitants. Some early explorers reported evidence of Jesuits and coureurs de bois in the area; others reported evidence of Native American settlements. Previous to that, a people known as the Mound Builders lived in the area. For more information on the Great Lakes and Detroit areas up to 1701, follow the links below.

DID YOU KNOW…..that just about everything an individual imports into Ontario is subject to the Harmonized Sales Tax of 13%. This is something that every border city shopper knows, but did you also know that if you're on the Canadian side of the border, and thinking about shopping on any U.S. website and having your purchase shipped to Canada, there are even more hidden costs that may catch you by surprise? Well don't be surprised because these hidden costs are called Brokerage Fees.
Brokerage fees are what Customs Brokers charge you to get your packages processed through Canada Customs at the Canadian border. These fees are often as high as 20%-40% of the total price of the item that you just paid for! All courier companies (FedEx, UPS, DHL), the USPS and even Canada Post use customs brokers to get your packages across the the Canadian Border, and these companies make a lot of money handling your items!
Can you imagine buying a new computer for $1400.00 USD and when it's delivered to your house, you have to pay an additional $400.00 extra to a Customs Broker? It just doesn't seem fair!
As a licensed and practicing lawyer in Detroit, I deal with all types of questions involving the US/Canada border, and one of the questions I deal with on a regular basis is; 'how do I avoid brokerage fees when shipping items to Canada?" This question gave me a great idea….Why not secure an address in Detroit that Canadians can use as THEIR OWN PERSONAL SHIPPING ADDRESS? This was the birth of DetroitMailBox.com.
DetroitMailBox.com, is your very own safe and secure location in Detroit that is only steps from the Windsor/Detroit Tunnel. DetroitMailBox.com allows individuals to receive any letter, parcel or package for only $6.95 per item, and the best part of all: NO BROKERAGE FEES!
All you have to do is shop online and have your package shipped to us at:

Don't have your U.S. items held up at the border'Hey Windsor/Essex County....Have your packages, mail, presents shipped to us and don't pay brokerage fees or delivery charges!
Many companies do not ship to Canada. This often means you have to buy the item for upwards of 40-50% more in Canada, and sometimes it isn't even sold locally!
Even when companies DO ship to Canada, their shipping charges are often far too expensive. By using detroitmailbox.com as your US shipping address, you can get your package at the border without paying those expensive fees.
No Brokerage Fees! - These are those nasty fees that are charged in order to process your item at customs. These often aren't factored in during the checkout process and you are made to pay them when the item arrives at your doorstep. By using detroitmailbox.com as your US border shipping address, you don't spend a dime on these fees.
*Customs declaration is your duty and responsibility. Duties and fees may be imposed by customs on merchandise purchased outside Canada. The applicable charge will be based on the value and/or gross weight and may differ according to the commodity. You are responsible for payment of all duties and fees.
